Battle of the Blackbeards

I think a lot of people went through a pirate phase at some point in their life. Honestly, I never really left it behind. I’ve made other posts about Black Sails before, and it’s one of my favorite shows, but one of the best recent shows that I’ve watched is Our Flag Means Death. Both of these shows feature the pirate Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, though the portrayals vary wildly. Both go back and forth between society and the pirate life, both feel betrayed by their right hand man but let him back into their confidence, but while for one the title of Blackbeard has begun to wear, for the other the brutality that name evokes has never been just for show.

I once again used Krita to edit this project. The two photos I started with were different resolutions, and I have to size up Teach on the right which made seamless merging difficult, but I tried to adjust the colors on both photos and use some very transparent layers to make it look like the light is hitting both men from behind. I also used a variety of selection tools to remove the background I wasn’t using, including the magnet selection tool that I had never used before but which proved very helpful. This photo was really a joy to make, both because I am getting less frustrated with my tools and because the subject was something I love.
